Those Japanese genius at Honda have shown off the latest fruit of their Brain Machine Interface (BMI) program, and it's impressive! The Brain Machine Interface is a development by Honda that translates human thoughts into electrical data that can be interpreted by machines, specifically in this demonstration - Asimo - Honda's astronaut looking humanoid robot that fell up the stairs at a demonstration of it's genius artificial intelligence.

The technology is clearly in it's infancy, however the project only began in 2006 - so it's incredible how far Honda have come in only three years. In this latest demonstration, Honda had Asimo's operator "think" about certain parts of the human anatomy, for example, right hand, left hand, tongue, head, etc. Asimo would then verbally identify the body part the operator was thinking off and make a movement with it's corresponding robotic limb. The operator was initially presented with a picture of somebody's right hand, and sat for a few seconds, thinking of his own right hand - Asimo then identified "right hand" as the body part the operator was thinking off, and waved with his/her/it's right hand! Hot piss indeed!

Honda envisage the technology to be utilised in the homes of the future - in the demonstration, Honda explained how a home-heating-system could "read the thoughts" of it's occupants, and adjust the temperature if general consensus was that the home was too hot/cold. Honda also showed off how they imagine the technology to be implemented in the vehicles of the future; a woman walked to her car with her arms full of shopping, only to "think" the boot/trunk open, so she could load up the car without scrambling around for keys, and putting the shopping down. Car doors would also open and close according to the user's thoughts.

Is the technology feasible? Probably not. I mean think of all the complications - what if an aggrieved husband imagined the car boot to slam shut on his wife's head as she loaded up the shopping and the car accordingly slammed shut the boot on his wife, injuring or killing her. Would the law need to be extended to cover our THOUGHTS? Who knows... that's for Honda to sort out I guess, not me!

So what are your thoughts on this technology? How would you like to see it implemented? Computer games? Musical instruments that play the note you imagine? House chores? Let me know your thoughts and opinions!
