So Microsoft have updated all their "live" shit... messenger... hotmail... games for windows... and it all looks a lot purdier... but... nearly all of the good functionality has been stripped out, and what's left doesn't work properly. Hmm... FAIL?

windows liveThis has pissed me off SO much because I use MSN, and accordingly hotmail, extensively - and it simply DOESN'T WORK any more. How could Microsoft have released this update!? It's completely shocking... somebody was sitting at a desk somewhere test driving the update and actually sent an email saying "Hi Bob, love the new update. There are no known issues from our end, good to go live" and so it was so! I can't beleeb how retarded this company are. Now I don't think this update is available generally... presumably it will be officially released in a few weeks/months, in the mean time, I'm going to remove it all whilst trying to save my custom emotes and reinstall the official release.

Let's list the reason's why Mircrosoft's "upgraded" version of Live Messenger is total shit:

  • The display picture duplicates... the dp you are using will be duplicated in the shortlist of dps the next time you sign on, and the duplicate is a significantly lower-quality jpeg, looking pixelated and mutated.
  • Where are all the status settings? Now you're either available, busy, or away. There's no brb, in a call, out to lunch etc... This is because rather than little symbols on the green icon depicting your status, you'r either red, yellow, or green. It works well... but they really should have just allowed us to keep the previous status' and just grouped them by colour, i.e. brb could be yellow. Common sense, no?
  • The little "you have mail" envelope that links to your hotmail account... doesn't link to your hotmail account. Rather than taking you straight to your inbox it takes you to the MSN homepage. This is presumably in an effort to increase traffic to msn.com and accordingly, boost live searches on the top of the page. Good idea. In terms of usability? RETARDED. All they've done is added two extra clicks to get to where one click would have taken you previously - this is a massive faux-pas for a web-app company - STREAMLINE STREAMLINE STREAMLINE wins the game... but Microsoft tactic seems to be chucking hurdles in your way.
  • Webcam barely works... all too frequently you begin a webcam session only to see a white screen where your mates FACE should be. You close the box, restart MSN, log back in... try again... after a few attempts... yay it works! Then about 3/4 minutes later it says "your webcam session has ended" for absolutely NO reason.
  • Lost connection? Now I keep getting signed out every hour or so, and sometimes can't get back back online. Piece of SHIT!

Okay... now for the good points point.
  • It looks purdy. This latest version of Live Messenger has had a complete refresh, and I shan't lie, it looks sexy.

So what about hotmail? I think this has officially been released now, but I don't know for sure... How is it? Well it's exactly the same as yesterdays hotmail other than now you can't empty your junk or trash folders in a single click (the arrow next to the folder name) as you could previously... now you have go into the folder, highlight all the messages and delete them all... WHY? Who thought it would be a good idea to remove one of the only good features of hotmail?

And Live Mail, the desktop mail application? Well I've been using this for like... 6 months? And it was an official 1.0 release... (this means it's "final") and now I've suddenly been upgraded to the "beta" (this means it's work-in-progress). Well... what with Microsoft releasing Vista as an alpha (this means, it's utter shit and full of bugs because it's nowhere near finished) and pretending it was a 1.0 release this isn't a surprise they've done it with Mail too... but still... you'd of thought they would have learnt from the disaster of Vista, or at least not been so stupid they then release a patch upgrading it to "beta" hahaha... fucking morons...

Why, Microsoft... why!? How can you have so much money... so much experience... and STILL not get anything right. It's no wonder Apple have it so easy. Now if you'll excuse me... I hear my iPhone doing what it's supposed to do... and doing it well. Take note Microsoft.
